So I get up this morning at 6:00 and there is a fine coat of snow on the car...by eight it was a down pour of rain...by 11 it was blowing so hard the front door was blown open...then at 12 we had hail...

I saw your area on the news last night, must be bad if the BBC mentions it. In scotchland just now it's about 20 degrees c and sunny as I don't know what.
If you are still planning on using the Canon XL-1 watch the minimum temp as it stops working about 0 degrees. And explodes if it gets wet (may have made that up).
